Dental Implants
Dental implants offer a secure and reliable solution for replacing missing teeth. Whether you need to replace a single tooth or several, they provide a long-lasting option that mimics the appearance and functionality of natural teeth.
About Dental Implants
A dental implant acts as an artificial root designed to support a replacement tooth. Depending on the individual’s needs and condition, implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or larger prosthetics like dentures. By stabilizing bone levels, implants can help prevent bone loss, ensuring improved long-term support, functionality and aesthetics.
Unlike other tooth replacement methods, implants do not require modification of nearby teeth, making them a superior choice for replacing missing teeth. Additionally, they are an effective option for securing dentures in place.
Dental Implant Procedure
The dental implant process involves several steps tailored to each patient’s unique oral health needs, including whether tooth extraction or bone grafting is necessary.
- Consultation and Examination: We begin with a comprehensive exam, including X-rays to assess bone health, followed by a discussion of your treatment options to determine if dental implants are right for you.
- Tooth Extraction: If required, we’ll extract the tooth or teeth to be replaced by implants. If bone loss is present near the extraction site, a dental bone graft will be performed.
- Bone Grafting or Sinus Lift: For patients needing additional bone mass to support an implant, we may perform a bone graft or sinus lift. These procedures involve adding bone material to the jaw or the space between the sinuses and jaw. Healing time is required for the bone material to integrate with the existing jawbone before placing the implant.
- Implant Placement: The dental implant is surgically placed into the jawbone, and a healing cap is added to protect the site during the healing phase. If aesthetics are a concern, a temporary tooth can be provided until the final crown is ready.
- Healing and Osseointegration: After placement, the jawbone undergoes osseointegration, a process where the bone fuses with the implant to create a strong foundation for the artificial tooth. This phase typically takes a few months.
- Abutment and Crown Placement: The abutment, which connects the implant to the artificial tooth (crown), is attached to the implant. Finally, the custom crown is secured onto the abutment.

The procedure involves minimal pain, as local anesthesia is used to numb the nerves around the implant site, ensuring you won’t feel pain. While you may experience some pressure during the process, it should not cause discomfort.
After the anesthesia wears off, you might feel some discomfort for a few days. To promote a quick recovery, follow the aftercare instructions provided below.
Dental Implant Aftercare
After the procedure, you may experience some typical symptoms associated with oral surgery, including swelling of the gums and face, discomfort near the implant site, and minor bleeding.
- Pain Management: We recommend taking Motrin for 24–48 hours following the procedure. Most patients can resume work without needing to take time off.
- Minor Bleeding: It’s normal to notice a small amount of blood in your saliva for a day or two after surgery. If bleeding occurs, bite down on a gauze pad for 30 minutes. If it continues beyond a couple of days, please contact our office.
- Swelling: To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to the cheek near the surgical area for 10 minutes, then remove it for 20 minutes before repeating the process.
- Oral Hygiene: Proper care for your implants is essential for their longevity. Since dental implants function like natural teeth, it’s important to brush and floss twice daily, just as you do with the rest of your teeth, to keep them healthy and in good condition.
